The composite locator maps tabular data by matching it against geospatial features from multiple data sources. Thanks to a collaborative effort between State agencies and local jurisdictions, Maryland's Composite Locator was developed to provide a single, robust geocode service for Maryland. The composite locator serves as the single point source to access a wide range of locators and their vast data sources.
With 11 different locators under the composite, comes the challenge of maintaining compatibility, performance and functionality. The challenges are overcome in Maryland (DoIT) by using strategic GIS solutions, adopting newer technologies, and by evolving based on direct customer feedback.
Each locator is custom built to suit the needs of the end user without compromising the composite capability. Whether the end user just wants to locate an address in an application, or just trying to map an intersection, Maryland composite locator runs through over 6 million records to match and return the precise location. Making use of a combination of local, state and federal datasets in a strategic formulation and order makes it all possible.
Many challenges, Tips, Tricks and lesson learned during the formulation of these geocoders will be elaborated during the presentation.
