The use of GIS to maintain compliance with a stormwater National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit has become common practice. The Maryland Transportation Authority’s (MDTA) use of GIS has included ArcGIS Desktop, Collector for ArcGIS, Survey 1-2-3, Google Earth Pro, and SQL Server to inventory and maintain stormwater Best Management Practices and storm drain systems, as well as map impervious areas. MDTA has expanded the use of GIS to TMDL tree plantings and Survey123 for field data collection. The use of out-of-the-box, configurable software for field inspections enables MDTA to identify probable areas of concern and prepare for future maintenance needs. It decreases opportunities for field collection errors; paper forms are replaced with logic driven data entry rules, databases are updated immediately, and the elimination of paper copies removes the potential for transcription errors. This presentation will provide an overview of MDTA’s use of GIS for NPDES permit compliance with a focus on new TMDL related datasets and field collection activities.
