This mini-workshop will show how to use open sourced data inputs and ArcGIS’s network analyst extension measure and evaluate a multimodal transportation network en masse at multiple point locations, drawing upon the BaltimoreLink supplemental school service analysis for examples. The mini-workshop will begin with a short presentation of the process and findings of the BaltimoreLink supplemental school service analysis and conclude with participants learning the basics of using and setting up a multi-modal network for analysis in ArcGIS using open data through a hands-on tutorial.

In many US cities, the local transit agency is responsible for transporting public school students to and from school each day. In cities where students can participate in “school choice programs” instead of attending their neighborhood school, the local transit agency has a critical role in enabling students from all over the city to attend the school of their choice. Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) has choice programs for some middle school and all high school students.

As part of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) BaltimoreLink network redesign, Foursquare ITP used the “GTFS Data in ArcGIS” extensions to determine how the availability of supplemental service at schools impacts the accessibility for potential students who are eligible to participate in the choice admissions program. This analysis will help MDOT MTA identify key improvements to the base and supplemental transit network to maximize accessibility for school students.
